To date, the Kernow Kitesurf Club (KKC) has successfully increased and maintained kitesurfing access at Hayle, Gwithian and Perranporth. You may not kite at these spots, but your spot might be next, so please join and support your local kitesurf club.

Join the KKC Facebook group and get involved.

Kitesurfing in Cornwall will continue to grow in the same vein as surfing in Cornwall has, attracting world class competitions and future kitesurf legends. Cornwall has already bred the four times world champion Aaron Hadlow and a number of top kitesurfers continue to do well on the national and international kitesurfing circuit.

The sport is overseen in this country by the British Kite Surfing Association (BKSA), which inspects schools to ensure they meet the correct standards of safety and that instructors are properly qualified. If you're starting out in kitesurfing, take a lesson with a BKSA approved school.

North Kites

North Kites Biography.

The new 2011 Rebel has had few major changes in appearance but plenty of tweaks, minor changes and improvements to the build and materials.  Core to most of these improvements is the use of the all new Teijin Technoforce D2 canopy material with reportedly up to 40% more resistant to tearing and much less stretch.

The Rebel has been associated with power and stability for ages and is a strong and dependable surf kite as well as a proven freeride performer.  The 5th Line safety system is the safest and most dependable safety systems available and the new bar feels sweet in your hands.  Overall the least obvious but most noticeable chage will be the feel from the new and stronger, less stretchy Technoforce D2 canopy cloth, offering a much more crisp feel of the kite in the air.  A great kite just got better!
Quite importantly is the improvements to the new North 5th Element Bar system in the Iron Heart IV and new Trust Bar.

A wave kite of epic reputation, I'll be writing more as soon as I get one in the air .

Sizes: 5m, 6m, 7m, 8m, 9m, 10m, 11m, 12m, 14m, 16m.

Rider Review - 9m 2010 Rebel

I finally took the new Rebel for a spin to put it through it's paces and find out if the hype resembled the facts.  Wind conditions were gusty and frontl from 15 to 26 knots, dead onshore in large surf reef break (waves to double overhead).

The first thing you notice about the kite is it's very different to the 09 Rebel in it's build and also flying characteristics.  The floating centre strut, new straight wingtip leading edge segments between 2nd and 3rd struts, new connectors for one pump capilliaries, new rear line bungee system and of course the new bar (which I didn't have), new pump and new large bag all are nice changes.

Kiteboard

Kiteboard Biography.

Kiteboarding - also known as kitesurfing or flysurfing is a relatively new sport that first gained popularity in the late 90's.

Kiteboarding is a mixture between windsurfing, surfing and wakeboarding. Different size kites allows you to kiteboard in various wind strengths. The bigger the kite, the lighter the wind you can go in and vice versa. With bigger kites you can get going in as little as 10 knots, and with smaller kites you can still sail along in strong winds of 35 knots or more.

Learning to Kiteboard

Compared to windsurfing and surfing, kiteboarding is a relatively easy sport to learn. Most students are able to get up on their board after two or three lessons from a certified kiteboarding instructor, and with a bit of practice you can do your first jump in a few days.

Once you get more experienced you can catch some huge air. The pros can easily jump 10 meters or even higher.

What sort of equipment do I need?

You will need a kite, a control bar with lines, a board, and a harness. Just about all kites come standard with control bars. Optionally, you might need a wetsuit and a helmet. Most beginners wear helmets as an added safety measure. Wetsuits are needed in colder waters.

How much does it cost?

New kites can cost anything from $500 to $1700, depending on the size and brand. New boards typically cost anything from $500 to $800 Older stock can be bought for a lot cheaper and second hand gear can be picked up at bargain prices.

As kiteboarding is still a relatively new sport with technology that is always improving it is a good idea to not buy kites older than one or two years, as you will find that learning on a newer kite is not only safer but also easier when compared to older kites with outdated technology and safety features.

Kite Surfing Shops

Kite Surfing Shops Biography.

Eco-friendly surf shop, Envirosurfer put this great infographic together illustrating a number of ways we may be harming our environment as water sport enthusiasts.

While the Envirosurfer infographic targets the surf industry specifically, many of these effects and dangers are directly applicable to the kitesurfing industry as well. We use similar materials and techniques in the construction of our boards, the fast growing trend towards kitesurfing strapless (see the level of wave riding on the KSP Pro Tour) means we are using more board wax, and we use the same wetsuits and sunscreen that surfers do.

Click the image for the full sized infographic.
While you may argue the exact numbers in the report, there is little doubt that we are producing and consuming a large amount of potentially harmful products in our industry, so it is important that we create awareness and asses the way we use and dispose of the products we use as kitesurfers and surfers.

Let us know what you think of this and share your own ideas on how we can protect the environment, in the comments below. Please help us create awareness by spreading the word, or sharing this article.

Kite Surfing Lessons Biography.

Kitesurfing is the fastest growing watersport in the world. With proper training and equipment, you can experience the freedom of riding with the power of the wind. You don't have to learn how to surf, you just need an open mind to learn this new and exciting sport.

Kite surf lessons from Paracademy Extreme are the best around and our three day programme will see you safely through the early stages to a competent beginner. As with any naturally powered sport, lessons are imperative as the kites used are performance machines capable of delivering a nasty bight in untrained hands!

Our course will run over three days weather permitting and cover all aspects of the sport from theory to practice. Training is by professional instructors many of whom have passed through our ITC (instructor training course) so you have a guarantee of first class tuition.

Day one is your introduction to the sport, a background theory of kite surfing, the kit and our natural environment in which you will ride. A good understanding of the wind, strength and direction is paramount to the sport. Many of you will come from other wind or water sports so this will be easy for you. Some may never have been involved in wind sports at all – no matter, we all start from the basics ensuring a thorough knowledge our environment. The afternoon of day one is where you will have a hand on session with a power kite on dry land. You will explore the kite’s abilities and performance, where the kite flies best, where the kite’s power is best – all essential for the safe control of a modern high performance kite surf kite.

Day two you will have the chance to take to the water. In the shallows you will fly a full size kite boarding wing as you did the day before with a trainer kite. You will learn the principles of kite surfing accompanied by your instructor and with a safety boat on hand. Soon you will be body dragging – using the power of the kite to pull you through the water. It’s great fun!

Day three and you’re introduced to the kite surfing boards. There are many types of board and your instructor will show you the differences before you learn the basics of the essential water start – using the kite to pull you onto your board. This is the longest part of the course and the bit where you will join all your knowledge gained the two days before. From here on in you’re a kite surfer and the learning curve is steep once the basics are mastered.
Certification is by the IKO (international Kiteboarding organisation) and cards will be issued on satisfactory completion of your three day course. Your IKO card allows you to kite surf and hire kit around the globe and is internationally recognised. Paracademy Extreme is an IKO affiliated centre.

Personal training is available on request for either 1 to 1 or 1 to 2 persons. Personal training is dependent on instructor availability and all outdoor courses are subject to cancellation due to adverse weather conditions.
